November 2005 Our hearts ache as we watch tragedy after tragedy unfold on the Gulf coast of our country. Such times can awaken seldom-used senses and prompt strange experiences both for those undergoing the horror, for those trying to help them, or for those in mourning. So I wasn't surprised when Lauri Dodd, who hosts the "Better Living" show on KLLI FM and KRBI FM, Dallas, asked to interview me September 22nd about reports that rescue workers in New Orleans are experiencing what they believe to be paranormal events. Having myself spent six years in the U.S. Coast Guard, I can assure you that most rescuers at this point are worn to a frazzle. They have seen terrors most never imagined, and they have by now developed empathy with the victims. Many are on "psychological overload." Certainly this may explain some, if not most, of these reports. That being said, a critical point in my own quantum-based theories on paranormal phenomena is that great tragedies send out great "echoes" across what Einstein called "space-time." Since we all seem to be intimately connected across space-time, it's quite possible -- even normal -- for many of us to see and feel what others suffer elsewhere and "elsewhen." I see this all the time in my investigations. Probably the greatest examples of this in America are the poignant experiences of so many visitors to the battlefield at Gettysburg. New Orleans and the Gulf Coast would be no exception. I don't believe that ghosts are spirits of the dead because I don't believe in death. I'm convinced that the ghosts people see -- and that aren't attributable to natural or medical causes -- usually are living people elsewhere or elsewhen in space-time. Because great emotion or great suffering send out the greatest echoes, those are what percipients often see, hear or feel. More darkly, non-human "parasites" I describe elsewhere on this site almost certainly are "feeding" on the events. So what should rescue workers - or anyone else -- do if they have what they believe is a paranormal experience. The advice I give elsewhere holds good for them too: Calm yourself as much as possible. Then send out prayers, thoughts of compassion, and feelings of love and solidarity. Of course, this is healthy in just about any situation. But in the realm of the paranormal, it really evens things out. That's because, when you come down to it, we are all mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends to each other -- even to the farthest horizons of space-time. Copyright 2005 by Paul F. Eno.
